Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath, Chairman
Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath comes from a highly educated well known family of Barak Valley. He was born to ‘Bartabhagirath’ Late Baidyanath Nath and Hemaprabha Nath. His father ‘Bartabhagirath’ Late Baidyanath Nath was a freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the profession of teaching after Independence. He recognized the power of media and ventured into journalism. In 1950, he started the weekly Jugasankha, laying the foundation of the now largest Bengali daily in the whole of Northeast.
A graduate from Gauhati University. Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath continued with his father’s legacy and took over the reins of Jugasankha in 1970. Through his determination and untiring efforts, he transformed the weekly into a major daily newspaper as Dainik Jugasankha. With his dynamic leadership and commitment, Nath transformed the newspaper from a suburban daily to the largest circulated Bengali daily in the entire Northeast, and now in West Bengal, with two editions in Kolkata and Siliguri. In Assam, Dainik Jugasankha has two widely circulated editions in Silchar and Guwahati.
Having established Dainik Jugasankha as a successful daily, Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath with the mission of dissemination of information in all states of the region started English dailies in Arunachal Pradesh called The Arunachal Times, Manipur Chronicle in Manipur and The Mizoram Post in Mizoram. Apart from the Bengali daily, the Jugasankha group has another highly acclaimed English daily, Eastern Chronicle, published from Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar and New Delhi. It is evident that the Jugasankha Group of newspapers has a major presence in the entire Northeast. Sri Nath is the Chairman of the group as well as the Editor-in-Chief of all the newspapers of the group. However, Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath’s credentials should not be gauged with the number of newspapers he is credited with; rather, the most important thing is that, Nath with his nationalistic zeal uncompromisingly endeavours to spread the ideal of unity and harmony in the once turbulent Northeast. While Dainik Jugasankha has immensely succeeded in bridging the two isolated valleys– Brahmaputra and Barak in Assam, the group’s other newspapers have bridged the gap between various states of the Northeast.
Mr. Bijoy Krishna Nath is associated with various professional and social organisations. He is a senior member of the Indian Newspapers Society, New Delhi, the representative body of all the leading newspapers in India and a life member of Public Relations Society of India (PRSI). He represented the N.E Chapter for 10 long years in the National Council of PRSI. He was also the elected President of Gaon Panchayat in Rongpur (Cachar district) of Assam in 1980. He was appointed by the Governor of Assam as the Chairman of the Assam Linguistic Minority Development Board for the year 2008-9. He has participated in numerous seminars, discussions and debates on various national and international issues in and outside India in various organizations and institutions. Currently, he is the President of Antorjatik Bangla Bhasha-Sanskriti Samiti, New Delhi.
